Helen Thayer 1938- American Arctic Adventurer I n 1988 Helen Thayer became the first woman explorer to plan and carry out an unsupported solo expedition to the magnetic North Pole. No one has successfully soloed to the North Pole by foot since her successful expedition. Thayer was born in 1938 in Whangerei, New Zealand.. She gained international recognition on March 30, 1988, when she became the first woman to travel solo to the Magnetic North Pole. At the age of 50, she completed a journey of approximately 586 kilometers (364 miles) across drifting Arctic sea ice entirely on foot, pulling her own sled and carrying all necessary supplies.
