The dbx 286A has a two-band "audio enhancer" but it's not frequency-specific, and in fact the manual states that the "high-frequency" enhancer is frequency-adaptive. Therefore I have to conclude that the dbx 286A is too wideband; it's putting out audio frequencies which don't contribute to speech intelligibility and on-the-air performance... Well, now we have. dbx has re-named and re-faced the venerable 286A. to the silver-faced 286S. The 286A has a rather impressive pedigree background. a circuit design by Bob "Optimod" Orban himself. and the use of a Burr-Brown op-amp chip in the mic pre section. These two things give the 286A its "lotta bang for the buck" reputation.
