The word paifang (Chinese: 牌坊; pinyin: páifāng) was originally a collective term for the top two levels of administrative division and subdivisions of ancient Chinese cities. The largest division within a city in ancient China was a fang (坊; fāng), equivalent to a current day ward. [1] Each fang was enclosed by walls or fences, and the gates of these enclosures were shut and guarded.. 1986: Construction of Friendship Archway It is a 48 foot high and 75 foot wide gateway and is the nation's largest Chinese archway. It is the essence of DC Chinatown located at H and 7th street today.

They usually have two or more pillars supporting a roof like structure. More elaborate paifangs can even look like a city gate. Archways are usually found at the borders of Chinatowns and mark the border between the host society and the Chinese community separating the two social and cultural.
